TNSC is pioneer in the production of Double Fortified salt (Iron and Iodine). It produces DFS from 2000 onwards. TNSNC adopts two methods viz.,
NIN-Forumula : Formula developed by National Institute of Nutrition , Hyderabadwherein Food Grade Ferrous Sulphate is used a nutrition agent
MI Formula: Formula developed by Micronutrient Initiative, Canada wherein Encapsulated Ferrous Fumerate is used as nutrition agent.
The above salt is being supplied to the school going children in the Mid Day Meal programme of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The average supply is around 2500 tonnes per annum to each Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Now TNSC comes to the open market sale of Double Fortified salt with NIN formulation. TNSC would give its focus to the women, Child and lactating mothers.
Tamil Nadu Salt Corporation by supplying the above Fortified salts to take part in the "Universal Salt Iodisation Programme". From 1991 to 2014 TNSC has supplied following quantum of salt.
