TNSC is a fully owned enterprise of the Government of Tamil Nadu, established during 1974 at Valinokkam in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. TNSC is having a capacity to produce 2 to 2.5 lakhs tones per annum by developing around 3200 acres of land and providing employment to 1200 of workers on direct/indirect system. TNSC is developing the additional area of 2320 acres in its unit at Valinokkam from April 2011 onwards as per GO. MS. no. 48 Industries (MIF2) Department, dated 22.02.2011. TNSC will achieve a production of about 3.5 to 4 lakhs tonnes/year in addition about 1000 additional local workers will be benefited by this project.

At the time of Iodised salt introduction TNSC was able to distribute Iodised salt through PDS only to an extent of 3000 tonnes per year during 1997-98.
TNSC took the lead role and obtained the orders of the Government to include iodised salt as an essential commodity in the Public Distribution System in the state at an affordable price.
TNSC is pioneer in the production of Double Fortified salt (Iron and lodine). It produces DFS from 2000 onwards. TNSNC adopts two methods viz., NIN-Forumula MI Formula.
